Detailed description of Hillcrest Golf Club, CLOSED 2003

Hillcrest Golf Club is a Public, 27 hole golf course facility located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Hillcrest Golf Club has three 9-hole golf courses. These courses can be combined in pairs to form three different 18 hole course challenges. The nine-hole courses are The Cedarside Course, The Hillside Course, and The Lakeside Course.

Hillcrest Golf Club opened for play in 1932. The course was designed by J. T. Jones, Sr.

This club has three excellent nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations. There is enough variety of terrain on each course to challenge any level of golfer, but there are no sand bunkers. The signature hole on the Lakeside Course is #4, featuring water all along the right and left sides of the fairway. The Lakeside/Cedarside Course is the easiest combination with its straightaway fairways. The Cedarside/Hillside Course and the Hillside/Lakeside Course are the most challenging because of all the water hazards and trees that can cause problems for the best of golfers. Lakes and creeks come into play on all three courses.

In 1932 this country was in the heart of the great depression. Not a particular good time to venture into a risky business. But nevertheless, a partnership was formed between J. T. Jones Sr. and Mr. Ables of Virginia. Thus the beginning of Hillcrest Golf Club, Inc. was founded. With a 10 year lease in hand they busily set about building a 9 hole golf course. Having only their determination and a strong back, they successfully cleared the land with the assistance of mules & horses. With the outbreak of WWII Hillcrest was temporarily shut down (1941-46).

In 1946, with the war over, J. T. Jones Sr. and Billy Jones, his son, decided to reopen the Golf Club. As the country and Winston-Salem began to prosper, so did Hillcrest. By 1952 they had expanded the course to 18 holes. In 1972, Bill Jones, Richard Jones, Bob Jones & Don Jones built “Lakeside” and expanded the Golf Club into a 27 hole course. With little more than a dream, J. T. Jones and his family succeeded to build a local landmark that has supplied countless hours of golfing to thousands of local and visiting patrons.

Hillcrest Golf Club closed in 2003.
